If your DNS or registrar gives you an error when adding the CNAME record Bandwango provided, follow these steps.

Sometimes, when setting up your Bandwango subdomain, your domain registrar’s DNS panel might reject the CNAME record we provide. This usually happens because of formatting issues, typos, or because the DNS is managed somewhere else (like Cloudflare or Squarespace) instead of your registrar. The steps below walk you through how to fix it.

1. Double-check for typos.
It’s easy to miss a single letter or number—make sure the destination exactly matches what you were given.

2. Don’t include “https://”.
The DNS target should look like this:
example-subdomain-123abc.herokudns.com
—not a full web address.

3. Remove any trailing dot (“.”).
Some systems automatically add a period at the end; remove it and try again.

4. Make sure you’re editing the correct name servers.
If you’ve ever connected your domain to another provider (like Cloudflare, Squarespace, or Wix), that service might now control your DNS.
To check:

  • Go to who.is or a similar lookup tool.

  • Search your domain and look for the Name Server section.

  • The listed provider (for example, ns1.cloudflare.com indicates a Cloudflare name server) is where your DNS records must be added.
If it doesn’t match the registrar you’re using, log into the correct provider and add the CNAME record there.
